"Sitting Here In Limbo" is a new painting, born out of the self imposed obligation to paint nautical images since I have been a newly elected Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artist. Fortunately, nautical images covers a lot of ground and includes just about everything that I do anyway. This image is all about the loneliness of the ocean and how nature imposes it's stifling presence upon you when your out at sea and realizing how small you are.
Here, a very large ship has succumbed to the ravages of salt air and salt water and no one to care.
I really enjoy painting skies in a painting like this because of the freedom of the brushwork. The water requires a little more attention in that it has to be right to a certain extent and it must reflect it's surroundings. The boat itself is always a challenge and is just a matter of putting in the time and paying attention to the initial drawing and really mixing the colors correctly. Nothing like a little burnt sienna to make the metal rusty.
Quiet and peaceful, this ship is waiting for it's final voyage.
